Respect for Marine Ecosystems is A Fundamental Value for Rio Mare.
A commitment that the company is pursuing with great determination in order to safeguard the wealth of the seas and oceans for future generations.

Rio Mare, an ISSF Founding Member.
The International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) is a unique global non-profit organization that brings together the top scientific authorities, world leaders in the tuna industry and non-governmental environmental organizations like the World Wildlife Fund.

As a founding member of the ISSF, Rio Mare promotes a culture of responsible fishing that respects marine ecosystems and works to safeguard tuna and other marine species. With this involvement, Rio Mare wants to bring new energy to the commitment to sustainability that has always characterized the company, as shown by its membership in the Earth Island Institute's Dolphin Safe program since 1992.

Supporting the ISSF’s Strategic Vision and Global Objectives.
In 2010 the ISSF announced a three-year strategic plan that focuses on the most urgent problems that the fishing industry must tackle in order to be sustainable: management of fishing capacity, reduction of bycatch, elimination of illegal and unregulated fishing, further data collection and improvement of company performance through monitoring, surveillance and controls.

The Fundamental Role of Scientific Research in Guaranteeing Sustainable Fishing.
Thanks to its ISSF involvement, Rio Mare is promoting scientific research. Each year the foundation publishes a detailed report entitled Status of the World Fisheries for Tuna, which analyzes the health of world tuna stocks. Moreover, this year the ISSF will begin the first globally coordinated research project aimed at reducing by-catch during fishing.

The whole traceability
In order to guarantee the provenance of its tuna, Rio Mare has adopted a system that traces the movements of the fish from the moment it is caught up until it reaches the consumers plate. Rio Mare tuna is a totally traceable product: for each can of tuna it is possible to establish where the fish was caught, what boat it traveled on, what batch it was a part of and when it arrived at the processing facility. Rio Mare has never used Bluefin tuna in its products and never will.
